New handheld consolidates four data-capture and connectivity functions for retail, logistics and field service workers
BREA, CA, UNITED STATES, November 3, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — TSC Auto ID, a global leader in automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) and thermal label printing technologies, today introduced the X40, a mobile computer that combines RFID reading, barcode scanning, NFC and 5G connectivity in a single handheld device. The X40 has received a Red Dot Design Award 2026.
The X40 is the size of a smartphone and is built to meet the security, reliability and lifecycle requirements of retail, logistics, field service and manufacturing operations. Built around an Impinj E Family RAIN RFID reader IC with Gen2X support, the X40 combines tools frontline teams typically carry separately — an RFID reader, barcode scanner, NFC reader and communications device — in one platform.
Design
The X40 weighs 199g and has a 6.11-inch AMOLED display, which remains readable across a range of lighting conditions and uses less power. TSC designed the device for one-handed use over a full shift, with controls intended to reduce training time.
Red Dot Design Award
The Red Dot Design Award is an international product design competition. The X40 was recognized in the 2026 awards. According to TSC, the X40 was designed to reduce downtime for frontline teams: light enough to carry through a shift, simple to learn, and durable enough for daily use.
One Device for Multiple Tasks
Retail associates, warehouse teams and field technicians often carry several devices during a shift. The X40 combines those functions in one device:
• Identify & Track: The Impinj E Family reader IC with Gen2X support provides up to 27 dBm transmit power and -93 dBm sensitivity, supporting tag readability and read range.
• Scan: A scan camera with a ToF sensor for barcode capture
• Tap: A front and top NFC reader supports payment and authentication scenarios
• Connect: 5G and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity
• Locate: A UWB-enabled device finder to help teams locate misplaced devices
• Keep going: A warm-swap battery that can be replaced without shutting the device down
• Process: A Qualcomm QCM 6490 processor for real-time data processing and business applications
Consolidating these functions reduces the number of devices teams need to buy, charge, manage and secure.
“Frontline workers shouldn’t have to choose between a device that’s easy to carry and one that does the whole job,” said Jong Il Lee, Product Sales Manager at TSC. “With the X40, they don’t. RFID, scanning, NFC, and 5G come together in one compact device, so workers can leave the extra hardware behind.”
“TSC’s X40 is an outstanding example of how to seamlessly integrate RAIN RFID into sleek, next-generation enterprise mobile computers,” said Vikas Dhurka, Senior Director of Reader IC Product Management at Impinj. “Powered by Impinj E Family reader ICs, the X40 enables frontline workers to capture Physical Intelligence – accurately and reliably connecting items in the physical world to the AI-powered digital world, so enterprises can see what’s missing before it matters and act on what’s moving before it’s lost.”
Durability
The X40 withstands drops of up to 4 ft (1.2 m) with a rugged boot and operates in temperatures from -4°F to 122°F (-20°C to 50°C).
